Synopsis:

Paul Dietrich (Richard Dreyfuss), a gifted pianist approaching thirty, decides that a prestigious international piano competition in San Francisco will be his last attempt to make a career as a concert pianist before he gives up and takes a teaching job. There he meets Heidi Schoonover (Amy Irving), a young pianist he met at a summer festival, who is also in the competition, coached by the demanding Greta Vandemann (Lee Remick). As the finals approach, Paul and Heidi fall in love, but each wants to win, and their romance is tested by the competition, while the defection of a Soviet contestant's teacher delays the finals. Directed by Joel Oliansky.
