Synopsis:

The Northwest, 1875, during the gold rush. Matt Calder (Robert Mitchum), a farmer just released from prison, comes to a mining camp to find his young son Mark (Tommy Rettig), whom he has not seen for years, and takes him to live on his homestead by the river. Kay Weston (Marilyn Monroe), a saloon singer, has looked after the boy. When her fiancé Harry Weston (Rory Calhoun), a gambler, wins a gold claim at poker, they set out on a raft to register it in Council City, and Matt rescues them from the rapids. Harry steals Matt's horse and rifle and leaves Matt and Mark defenceless, with Kay, on the eve of an Indian attack. With no way out, the three must take the raft down the dangerous river. Directed by Otto Preminger.
