Synopsis:
Paris, the 1850s. Gervaise (Maria Schell), a laundress with a limp, is abandoned by her lover Lantier, who leaves her with their two young sons. She marries Coupeau (François Périer), a kind, hard-working roofer, and they are happy for a while. With her savings and hard work, Gervaise is able to open her own laundry. But when Coupeau falls from a roof and is injured, he starts drinking and refuses to work, and when Lantier returns to their lives, Gervaise's struggle to survive becomes harder and harder. Directed by René Clément, based on Émile Zola's novel L'Assommoir; Maria Schell won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival.
