Synopsis:
The life of Johann Sebastian Bach, told through the voice of his second wife, Anna Magdalena (Christiane Lang), who describes, in a voice-over, their life together, his work as cantor in Leipzig, his struggles with the authorities, the births and deaths of their children, and his last years. The film is made up mainly of long, still scenes in which Bach, played by the great Dutch harpsichordist and conductor Gustav Leonhardt, performs his music with musicians in period costume and on period instruments, recorded live; the music is not an accompaniment but the heart of the film. The first feature film of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet.
