Synopsis:

Paris, 1977. Maria Callas (Fanny Ardant), the greatest opera singer of the 20th century, has lost her famous voice and her great love Aristotle Onassis, and lives in seclusion in her apartment. Her old friend, the concert promoter Larry Kelly (Jeremy Irons), comes to her with an extraordinary proposal: to make a film of an opera, with her acting the role and miming to her recordings from her prime. Determined never to sing again, she refuses at first, but when Larry shows her an edited film of her last, painful concert with her young voice dubbed over it, she feels the thrill of music again and agrees. The opera they film is Carmen. A fictional story directed by Franco Zeffirelli, a friend of Callas, with Joan Plowright.
